Grandma’s Special Meal: the classic lasagna dish, simply the best French bread and the best ever chocolate batter cake.
There are many things that I’ve learned from my Grandma Bevan. She is the most organized person I know and taught me to have a love for lists, planners and bulletin boards. She is the greatest at remembering special days and always has a card ready for the occasion. I can’t tell you how many of those special notes I have saved in my memory box. Her words would lift and inspire me during the hardest of days or weeks.
I think the greatest lesson I learned was through the help of my grandpa. Every time we went to my grandparents house to visit or celebrate an occasion, my grandpa would gently nudge me to see if grandma needed any help. I would eagerly jump up from what I was doing and run to my grandma’s side to aid her in any of her tasks. It usually had to do with serving dessert but it was always appreciated by my grandma.
I learned so much from this small yet impactful lesson that I’ve spent decades trying to master it. Through the gentle nudge of my loving grandpa, I have learned to look for ways to help. I try to offer my assistance before it is asked and always ask what can I do to help. I feel like asking for help is the hardest thing anyone could ever do. Yet taking the initiative to offer first allows others the opportunity to solicit the help they may be needing.
Being a mom no myself, I can’t think of any words I’d rather hear than “what can I do to help” coming from a family member. Sometimes my weakest moments are when I am overwhelmed with the tasks of being a mother. I hope that I can teach my children through my own gentle nudges to sincerely offer to help and learn the joy that comes from helping others.
So this week’s meal is one that reminds me of my grandma. An expert homemaker who spent her life laundering, cleaning and preparing menus for her growing family. Not only that but she is a master at teaching priorities and making sure that our spirituality is the highest priority we have. I will forever be blessed by her example and simplistic model of motherhood.
