Sweet bottled apple pie filling is the perfect treat for a pie or a crisp.
Bring fall flavors right to your dinner table.
Fall is here and with it comes an abundance of harvest. This year our home was overflowing with apples. So I enlisted my mom to teach me how to bottle apples. I have never needed to do my own but have always enjoyed the fruits of her labors. This will be a tradition we do for years to come!
The first thing you need are apples. We have a tree at our cabin and ended up with boxes and boxes of apples. So that was not a problem. The next item is a must have! After making 6 batches of apple pie filling I bought my own apple cutter. I can’t imagine making anything apple without one!

- Mix the sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt together in a large stock pot. Then stir in the water. Cook and stir until thick.
- Add lemon juice, food coloring and peeled/sliced apples. Put into cooked mixture. Heat thoroughly.
- Pack into sterilized hot quart jars, leaving 1 inch of head space.
- Put into hot water bath and process for 20 minutes.
One quart makes a 9 inch pie. To make pie, dot filling with butter and bake at 400 degrees for 50 minutes.
If you have bottled peaches or jam, you know that the process is very time consuming but this recipe so simple! We literally had 7 jars done in an hour. We had three people working on it so we just kept making batches after batches. Everyone walked home with 14 jars.
The perfect treat for a pie or a crisp.
This is the perfect thing to add to a pie crust or the oatmeal mixture of a crisp. We love gifting a jar with a cute pie plate. Whatever you do, you will never go back. I loved making memories in the kitchen with my mom and sister in law. Even the kids jumped in to help core and wash the apples.
