  1. Mix the sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt together in a large stock pot. Then stir in the water. Cook and stir until thick.
  2. Add lemon juice, food coloring and peeled/sliced apples. Put into cooked mixture. Heat thoroughly.
  3. Pack into sterilized hot quart jars, leaving 1 inch of head space.
  4. Put into hot water bath and process for 20 minutes.
Recipe Notes

One quart makes a 9 inch pie. To make pie, dot filling with butter and bake at 400 degrees for 50 minutes.
